Class A Licenses

Class A Licenses

Drivers of trucks and other commercial vehicles are required to carry commercial vehicle licenses, which are issued according to the type of vehicle being driven and the amount of load it is carrying. Licenses include Class A, Class B, and Class C. If you are a trucking professional or are considering pursuing a job in the industry, it is incredibly important to be familiar with what each license entails.

The Class A Commercial License

In the United States, most drivers of large commercial vehicles (such as semi trucks) are required to carry Class A commercial driver’s licenses. These licenses apply to drivers of any vehicle that has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (which measures mass of a road vehicle) over 26,000 pounds – an equivalent of 13 tons.

In addition to the Class A license, drivers may need to secure endorsements for their vehicles, depending on the nature of the cargo. For example, an H endorsement is for hazardous materials, while an S applies to school buses.
