The Compression Brake: “Jake Brakes”
The Compression Brake: “Jake Brakes”
A compression brake (also called a “Jake brake,” after its manufacturer) is a type of braking system frequently used on diesel engines which allows the vehicle to use the power generated by the engine to decrease speed. Despite being an incredibly useful piece of technology, its loud and somewhat frightening sound has caused it to be banned by city ordinances in many towns.

How the Jake Brake Works
The compression braking system works by opening exhaust valves on the cylinders of the diesel engine, which releases air which has become trapped in the cylinder. While gasoline engines can effectively be engine-braked by operating the engine close-throttled, diesel engines lack air intake, and therefore cannot be. The Jake brake allows for effective engine braking.
Unfortunately, many cities have legislation against using the compression brake within city limits due to the loud rattling noise it creates. The punishment for breaking these ordinances is usually a substantial fine. Fortunately, new muffler systems are being released which drastically reduce the volume of the distinctive rattling and may lead to the legalization of engine braking in the near future.
