Dangerous Trucker Errors

It is no secret that truck driving is a dangerous job. Even a well-trained driver who takes correct precautions can experience major accidents caused by other drivers’ errors, hazardous road conditions, and more.  However, studies have shown that up to 40% of trucking accidents are caused by preventable mistakes committed by truckers.

Practicing safe driving, or making sure your drivers do so, is important on many levels. In addition to the wellbeing of your truckers and over drivers, there is also your business’s future to consider. Being at fault for a serious accident can lead to financial and legal complications that may affect your life for years to come.

Common Truck Driver Mistakes

Some of the most common truck driver errors that cause severe accidents every year include:

  • Drug abuse – Whether a trucker has consumed illegal amphetamines, alcohol, or over-the-counter stimulants, any kind of substance abuse can greatly increase the chances of a motor vehicle accident. A study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that in 44% of accidents caused by trucker error, the trucker had been abusing drugs.

  • Traffic violations – Completing a long drive on a strict schedule can be very challenging, but this is no excuse for dangerous actions such as illegal passing, tailgating, and other acts of aggressive driving. Speeding in particular has been the primary cause of many serious accidents.

  • Incorrect freight loading or truck maintenance – When drivers fail to inspect their vehicles before leaving on a trip, the consequences can be severe for themselves and other drivers. Unsecured cargo, engine failure, malfunctioning brake lights, and other hazards can often be avoided by simple inspections and repairs.

Accidents are not always avoidable. However, by following basic safety protocol, you can greatly reduce your chances of being in a truck accident.
