Eating Healthy on the Road

Eating Healthy on the Road

One of the leading health risks among truck drivers is obesity and its related complications, which can include diabetes and heart disease. For truckers, obesity is usually caused by two factors: a lack of regular exercise and the unhealthy, high-fat foods that many people eat while traveling. Fortunately, it is easier to find healthy food on the road now than it used to be – and if you can’t find any, you can always pack some from home.

If you work as trucker or manage a freight company, you know there are some potential downsides to this line of work. Waiting for overdue payments from customers does not need to be one of them. To discuss freight factoring and how it can help your business’ income, contact TBS Factoring Service, LLC at 1-800-207-7661.

Nutrition Tips for Truck Drivers

Driving a truck does not have to mean living on greasy fast food or truck stop fare. Some easy ways to eat well on the road include:

  • Pack healthy snacks in your cab. Trail mix, baked potato chips, popcorn, and unsalted nuts are relatively healthy foods that do not need to be refrigerated. If you have room to bring a small cooler, you can also back fresh fruits and vegetables. You should also keep plenty of water close at hand to stay hydrated.
  • While staying at a motel, you may want to purchase food to eat in your room rather than going to a restaurant. This option is usually both healthier and cheaper. If possible, buy your supplies from a grocery store rather than a gas station or convenience store. They will have a wider selection, including more healthy options.
  • If you do need to stop at a restaurant, consider your options carefully. Order a meal that comes with vegetables, fruit, or a salad whenever possible. Try to eat lean meats (poultry and fish) over red meats (beef and lamb). Choose grilled or baked entrees over fried ones.

Taking these simple steps can help you avoid high blood pressure, clogged arteries, diabetes, and other health problems.
