Federal Law Bans Texting for Truck Drivers

Federal Law Bans Texting for Truck Drivers

For years, the effects of text messaging while driving have been the subject of numerous studies. After years of legislative back-and-forth, Congress has passed a law banning truck drivers from operating a cell phone with the intent of sending text messages. The law, which is effective across the United States, sets a hefty fine for any truck operator found to be breaking it.

The Repercussions of Texting

The law was announced on September 21, 2010 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and concerns drivers of commercial vehicles, including truck and bus operators. Under the new law, truckers could be fined as much as $2,750 for texting while driving.

Truck drivers have been banned from texting while driving since earlier this year, when guidelines concerning texting were introduced. The new law serves to strengthen those existing rules and provide serious repercussions to anyone found to be breaking them.

It is currently unknown the exact date the law will become official, but it is known that it will be sometime during the third week of October.
