Fighting Driver Fatigue

Truckers face a lot of hazards on the road: reckless drivers, damaged pavement, debris in the streets, and more. Unfortunately, one of the biggest hazards can be the most difficult to avoid. In one study by the National Transportation Safety Board, up to 52% of truck accidents surveyed were attributed to driver fatigue.

While road fatigue can happen to anyone, truck drivers are especially vulnerable to it. This is because of many factors: the long distances they drive, the pressure many feel to drive as long as possible without taking breaks, and so on. Every long-haul trucker needs to be aware of the dangers of nodding off while driving and know effective ways to prevent it.

Tips for Staying Awake

In the past, many truck drivers have tried to combat fatigue by taking over-the-counter supplements or even illegal amphetamines.  As you probably know, this is not the right solution. Stimulants can actually increase your chances of being in an accident by causing side effects like jitteriness, a reduced attention span, and even hallucinations in cases of severe abuse.

To fight road fatigue without putting your health and others’ safety at risk, try some of these healthier approaches:

  • Stop at least once every two hours. Of course you have a schedule to follow, but stopping for a few minutes will not slow you down too much. Doing some quick exercises or just stretching your legs can help you re-energize.
  • Eat several snacks or light meals over the course of the day, instead of two or three large meals. Eating a big meal can induce sleepiness, especially if it is high in fat and sugars. Lighter, healthier food, on the other hand, can help you replenish your energy.
  • Get enough sleep. Most adults need seven or eight hours every night, although everyone is a little different. If you are having trouble falling asleep at night, talk to your doctor about effective ways to fight insomnia.

Taking action against driver fatigue will not only help you feel better; it will make your trip safer for you and everyone else on the road.
