Four Winter Weather Dangers

Four Winter Weather Dangers

Driving a large truck or 18-wheeler is an extremely dangerous occupation. There are hazards at every turn which can be created by reckless motorists, defective roadways, and inclement weather. One of the most dangerous times of year to be on the road is the winter. By knowing what the most common dangers are, a truck driver may be able to minimize their risk of experiencing a devastating accident.

What to Look Out For

  1. Limited views of roadways and warning signs – Built up snow or ice can obscure the view that drivers have of speed limit signs, barriers, and other things in place to keep motorists safe.
  2. Frozen roadways and black ice – Cold weather can cause precipitation to build up on roadways and freeze. All ice can be dangerous, but black ice, which is hard to see, can be especially harmful.
  3. Vehicles that are not prepared for the freezing temperatures – Small vehicles and even large trucks may malfunction or perform in unusual ways in extremely cold temperatures.
  4. Fallen objects on roads – Freezing temperatures can cause trees, power lines, telephone poles, and other structures to crack or fall onto roadways which can surprise unsuspecting drivers and cause devastating accidents.
