New Texting Ban Extends to Hazmat Drivers

New Texting Ban Extends to Hazmat Drivers

Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced on September 21 that the ban on text-messaging while driving will now extend to operators of hazmat vehicles. The announcement was made in the middle of 2010’s Distracted Driving Summit – an event geared towards preventing distracted driving, which is believed to account for a large number of serious accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Texting Ban

The new ban on hazmat texting shores up a loophole in a previous ban that recently went into law. Until recently, truck and bus drivers were banned from text messaging while in the driver’s seat, while hazmat drivers were accidentally uncovered. However, by the end of October 2010, hazmat drivers will join the list.

The new ban comes on the heels of a major policy push by the Department of Transportation to reduce distracted driving, which is viewed by some to be as dangerous as drunk driving. According to recent figures, some 1,600 US companies have agreed to distracted driving policies, covering a total of 10.5 million employees.
