Proposed Commercial Truck And Bus Texting Ban
Proposed Commercial Truck and Bus Texting Ban
The transportation industry is consistently among the unfortunate leaders in occupational fatalities, partly due to the hazardous nature of commercial truck accidents. The size and weight of the typical truck can dramatically increase the severity of any collision. Driving while text messaging on a cell phone has been identified as a common cause of motor vehicle accidents. Eliminating this behavior can, at least in theory, make the roadways safer for everyone.
If a vehicle in your fleet has recently sustained significant damage due to another driver’s negligence, and unpaid invoices have left you without the cash on-hand to ensure that you are able to quickly and properly repair the truck, truck factoring might offer you the solution that you need. What the Ban Could Mean
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has already implemented a system by which commercial truck drivers operating a vehicle weighing more than 10,000 lbs are subject to fines of up to $2,750 if they are caught text messaging while driving. Some of the targeted activities include:
- Text messaging
- Editing or inputting contact information
- Web browsing
- Reading from a personal electronic reader
The proposed changes would effectively result in an outright federal ban on text messaging and related activities and could result in the revocation of an individual’s commercial driver license.
