How the Proposed Legislation May Help

One of the most unfortunate consequences of the current condition of the highway system is that many truck drivers are subjected to the threat of violence due to the lack of available parking and sufficient rest areas. Jason Rivenburg was a trucker who was tragically killed in a robbery while he waited with his truck in the parking lot of an abandoned gas station because the store to which he was to make a delivery did not have room for his truck at the time.

In response to this terrible event, legislation has been proposed in the House of Representatives and the United States Senate to extend funding for efforts to improve trucker safety. Under the proposed legislation, grants might be made available for:

• Building commercial parking facilities convenient to truck stops and motor plazas
• Building turnoffs along the highway for commercial trucks
• Opening weigh-in stations and other established facilities for commercial truck drivers to rest
• Creating safety rest areas with suitable commercial truck parking
