Trucking and the Economy
Trucking and the Economy
The trucking industry is perhaps uniquely situated economically, in that the financial ups and downs of so many other industries can directly affect it. With a slowing economy comes fewer purchases, fewer goods produced – and fewer goods shipped. A major dip in the national economy can have a serious effect on the field of trucking. According to reports, the continued recession has had a major impact on the overall truck tonnage on the road.

Truck Tonnage
According to the American Trucking Association, recent months have been marked by declines in the overall truck tonnage, although the organization believes that this will stabilize. While June and July saw back-to back decreases in the number of trucks on the road, August of 2010 saw a slight increase in tonnage.
Some believe that, because of the steady decrease in the overall capacity of the trucking industry, virtually any increase in the overall tonnage is substantial. Hopefully, as the economy grows, more jobs will become available.
